Super Mermom

Super Mermom is a character design and visual development project based on a children’s story that I wrote. The story explores important themes in a light and playful way, such as the strength of a mother’s love, the journey of self-discovery and empowerment of a 40+ woman and the importance of celebrating our differences. I developed each character, Yara, Rachel, and Oscar (to learn more about them, check out my homepage), and the different underwater backgrounds in the story, including the castle, the village, and their house.

The castle is an important setting for the story because the king is the antagonist of Yara, the main character.
The castle is located on a cliff far from the village, which reinforces the distance between the monarch and his subjects.

Yara and Rachel’s house is very cozy, illustrating the warm and affectionate relationship between them. The pink coral roof adds to the atmosphere. They live in a very pleasant and peaceful village, where merpeople share space with different marine animals. The architecture of the buildings uses coral formations in their structures, in order to attract fish and reduce the impact on the local ecosystem.
